2016 had some pretty amazing sports moments for women! From Simone Biles scoring a nearly perfect score this summer at Rio to UCONN women's basketball winning their 4th consecutive NCAA National Championship, this year has been filled with exciting moments and great performances by female athletes. Check out our top 10 US female athletes of 2016! Here it is! Our top 15 list!!! 10. Kayla Harrison: Armed with the toughness of a rhino, Kayla Harrison is at the top of Judo! She comes in at number 10 because of her performances in Rio that will lie in the history books. In the London Olympics she took home gold, making her the first female from the U.S. to ever place first. And this year, she amazed us again by bringing home the gold, putting the final touch on her Judo career. She will now be taking up a career in mixed martial arts competition.
9. Simone Manuel: This young history maker has left a splash that can be heard round the world! 20-year-old, Simone Manuel, takes our number 9 because she became the first African-American woman to win gold in an individual event at the Olympics. In Rio, Simone also set an Olympic record at 52.70 seconds in the 100m freestyle. She also helped the 4x100m free relay win silver. A remarkable girl a remarkable finish in her event, and a remarkable start to her Olympic career. 8. Aly Raisman: Making her second appearence at the Olympics, Aly Raisman comes in at number 8 because of her extroidinary run at the Olmpics this year! She placed 2nd in the Individual All-Around with a score of 14.866, and 2nd in the floor exercize. She also helped lead the team to a Team All-Around gold. Aly was majestic as she moved and tumbled across the floor, as we were expecting her to be. She also was the Pac Rim team 7 floor exercize champion. Rio were some of her best performances, nailing her passes, and was brilliant all around. 7. Breanna Stewart: Ending her NCAA career at the top of the top, Breanna Stewart brings home our numero siete because of her stellar games with UCONN Women's Basketball. This year she earned her third consecutive National Player of the Year, and led UCONN to their fourth consecutive national title. This is the first time in this sport's history for a team to win it four years in a row. Breanna averaged 19.4 points, 8.7 rebounds, four assists, and 3.4 blocks per game. She also helped the U.S. earn gold at the Olympics, and went as the first pick to the Seattle Storm in the WNBA. She left an incrediblely large shoe to fill, and I don't just mean in the fitting rooms. 6. Women's 4x100 Team (Engish Gardner, Allyson Felix, Tianna Bartoletta and Tori Bowie): WHAT A CREW! These wicked fast women zip up number 6 from their mind-blowing run in the Rio Olympics! Their time took home gold, breezing past everyone else in the race, at 41.01 seconds. They defended their title from the London Olmypics, and set the second fastest time ever recorded for the event. This incredible race, followed an ALMOST disqualification because of a bump-in the the qualifying race, causing them to bobble the baton. But despite the adversity, the sped past the rest of the world and kept that title! 5. Lilly King: Backing up her talk, Lilly King takes the number 5 position in our Top 10 due to her finish in the 100m breaststroke in Rio. Setting an Olympic record in the process, Lilly took home the gold with a time of 1:04:93. ONLY 19 YEARS OLD, Lilly set the high standard for the U.S. in the games this summer. Beating her Russian rival, and waving her finger in celebration, Lilly made sure there was no mistake that she was number 1 in the pool. 4. Mallory Pugh: Number four in our Top 10 belongs to Mallory Pugh. Prior Real Colorado stud, and now on the UCLA Women's Soccer team, Mallary became the youngest female player to ever wear the U.S. Soccer jersey and to score for the full national team. 18-year-old soccer star attended the Olympics in Rio on the team, and left an impact there too, by becoming the youngest female soccer player to ever score at an Olympics. She also played for the U20 National Team in the U20 World Cup where she helped lead the team to a 4th placed finish. We are looking forward to seeing the impact Mallory will have on and off the pitch for women's soccer. 3. Tobin Heath: A long time player for the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team, Tobin Heath dribbles her way up into our number 3! Tobin was named 2016 U.S. Soccer Player of the Year. In 2016, she has 22 caps, 6 goals, and 8 assists. But she is much more than just the stats! Tobin is decpetive on the field, and comes away with some of the greatest moves women's soccer around the world sees. She also plays for the NWSL Portland Thorns, finishing this season with a career and league record, and named to the NWSL Top XI. Tobin elevates her game all the time, and is an inspiration for young soccer players all over. 2. Katie Ledecky: A better swimmer than the fish themselves, Katie Ledecky comes up for a breath at number 2! She dominated the pool taking first place by a LONG SHOT in the 800m in the Rio Olympics, and taking a world record along with her! Her time was 8:04.79, 11 seconds faster than the silver, and it was her fourth time resetting the world record she has set! She had almost no competition for the event, but 19-year-old sensation captured the world's attention in the 5th event of the Olympic games. 1. Simone Biles: And at the top of the podium is Simone Biles! Taking the world by awe, Simone earned 5 medals in Rio: gold in Floor, Vault, Individual All-Around, Team All-Around, and bronze in beam. This 19-year-old tumbling powerhouse is flawless. The reigning World Champ now holds the title for most gold medals won by an American female gymnast in a single Olympics. Simone finished the Individual All-Around with no faults an almost perfect score of 15.500. She ended the games with the great honor of carrying the flag out, which is much deserving for this legacy maker! Thanks for reading about our Top 10 for 2016!
